I never thought I’d ever be writing “Warner Music Nashville” under the Label section for my favorite album of the year. Yet...I didn’t have to think twice about what my favorite and most listened to album was from this year. As you might reckon from the label, this is absolutely a country album. But while most country hits become hits for its broad appeal, what separates Ashley McBryde’s song writing is her specificity. As a struggling and underestimated singer, about daring her exs to call her for a booty call, about her dad driving a tractor listening to Townes Van These are HER stories. And with as many ideas she covers, the songs themselves are as varied and DYNAMIC as well. I’m going to listen to this album for a long time, and the only thing I ponder is which song will I obsess over next.
My two favorite concerts from 2018 were both by Shame. Please see them next time they’re in town.
No album made me happier than this *extremely* charming sophomore album. If Kimya Dawson made their way to Athens, Georgia and joined the Elephant 6 Collective .
Somehow Murder By Death made their best album 18 years in.
“I KISSED A BOY AND I LIKED IT!!!”
Australian garage rock soon to be heroes. Cathartic.
