CHIRP Radio Best of 2023

Throughout December, CHIRP Radio presents its volunteers’ top albums of 2023. Our next list is from CHIRP DJ Bobby Evers.

I always struggle with narrowing down a ranking of the best albums of the year. There was a lot I didn't get to and a lot that didn't quite make the cut, even though it was perfectly resplendent and full of talented production, songwriting and good vibes. Alas! Here it is.

#1 The Loveliest Time by Carly Rae Jepsen (Interscope)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Carly Rae Jepsen The Loveliest TimeIf you told my high school self that my musical taste would primarily become dominated by POP, he might have have just died of emabrassment right there. But here's the thing: the genre of pop has never been better, and CRJ proves that with her latest b-side entry to her 2022 album, The Loneliest Time. This album had everything, from synth hooks, to heartbreak anthems, to certified bops and bangers galore. Her b-side albums are always somehow better than her a-side albums, and I am here for it.

#2 the record by boygenius (Interscope)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

boygenius the recordThis is the true story of three friends picked to be in a band and find out what happens when people stop being boys and start being boygeniuses.

#3 Desire, I Want To Turn Into you by Caroline Polachek (Perpetual Novice)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Caroline Polachek Desire, I Want To Turn Into youFormer Charlift singer is back with more certified bops. I mostly listened to this so I would know the new material when i saw her live, but I would be lying to myself if it didn't make my top 10.

#4 Black Rainbows by Corinne Bailey Rae (Thirty Tigers)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Corinne Bailey Rae Black RainbowsThe singer of Put Your Records on is back and completely defies all expectations and subverts the genre.

#5 Javelin by Sufjan Stevens (Asthmatic Kitty)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Sufjan Stevens JavelinSufjan makes his best music when he's suffering and holy shit, what a bad year to be Sufjan Stevens, but what a good year for music.

#6 Water Made Us by Jamila Woods (Jagjaguwar)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Jamila Woods Water Made UsI met Jamila Woods in the audience at Pitchfork during the Noname show and she let me take a selfie with her, and I gave her my spot up front.

#7 The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We by Mitski (Dead Oceans)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Mitski The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are WeWithout Mitski, the world would have less sad songs, and that is somehow even sadder.

#8 Michael by Killer Mike (Loma Vista)

Killer Mike MichaelKiller Mike supports Cop City but this album is good.
